Coal City Youth Carnival
Enugu State has a population of about 5.6 million people. It is home to the Igbo (95% of population) and the Igala people, among others. Alias: Coal City State GENERAL INFORMATION Enugu State was created on August 27, 1991 out of the then Anam...bra State (from what was formerly known as Anambra North) by the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. It's capital is Enugu. The name of State derives from its capital city, Enugu. The word "Enugu" means "the top of the hill". Situated in inland south eastern Nigeria, Enugu State covers 7,161 square kilometres. It shares boundaries with Anambra on the West, Abia State on the South, Kogi on the North while Benue and Ebonyi on the East, and Imo State on the south. Enugu and Nsukka are its major towns. Enugu was the headquarters of the former East Central State and Eastern Nigeria. The state is situated on the highlands of the Agwu. Udi and Nsukka Hills to the east as well as Oji-River basin to the west. Lying partly within the semi-tropical rain forest belt of the south, the State spreads towards the north through a land area of approximately 7,161 sq km. Its physical features change gradually from tropical rain forest to open wood-land and then to Savannah. Apart from a chain of low hills, running through Abakaliki, Ebonyi State in the east to Nsukka in the north-west, and southwards through Enugu and Agwu, the rest of the state is made up of low land separated by numerous streams and rivulets, the major ones of which are the Adada River and the Oji River. ECONOMY Enugu State It is noted for its coal deposits. Its main economy depended on coal before the discovery of oil in commercial quantities. That is the main reason Enugu is nick named the coal city. The state is predominantly agricultural with yam tubers, palm produce and rice being their main produce. Enugu has good soil and climate, sitting at about 223 metres (730 ft) above sea level, and the soil is well drained. The mean temperature in Enugu State in the hottest month of February is about 97.16 °F (36.20 °C), while the lowest temperatures occur in the month of November, reaching 68.54 °F (20.30 °C). The lowest rainfall of about 0.16 cubic centimetres (0.0098 cu in) is normal in February, while the highest is about 35.7 cubic centimetres (2.18 cu in) in July. Economically, the state is predominantly rural and agrarian, with a substantial proportion of its working population engaged in farming, although trading (18.8%) and services (12.9%) are also important. In the urban areas trading is the dominant occupation, followed by services. A small proportion of the population is also engaged in manufacturing activities, with the most pronounced among them located in Enugu, Oji, Ohebedim and Nsukka. Electricity supply is relatively stable in Enugu. The Oji River Power Station (which used to supply electricity to all of Eastern Nigeria) is located in Enugu State. With the deregulation of electricity generation in Nigeria, and the proposed privatisation of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), the State Government would assist private investors to negotiate the take over and reactivation of the Oji Power Station. This is more so with the proximity of the Enugu coal mines to the power station, a driving distance of about 20 minutes. The state will also negotiate with investors interested in investing in the coal mining in Enugu. The coal industry use to be one of the biggest employer of labour in the state and the state is looking to attract investors in the industry. The escalating price of building materials, especially cements and bricks remain great concerns to the state, but it offers an opportunity for any investor. Egede is a town in Udi local government of the state. Egede has the best red soil for the manufacture of bricks. This is another industry the state is trying to develop. The state is also interested in developing cement manufacturing as the state has abudant supply of lime stone at Nkalagu. Education Every community in Enugu State has at least one primary school and one secondary school, funded and run by Government. There are also large number of private nursery, primary and secondary schools in Enugu State. Nigeria's first indigenous university, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), is located in Enugu State. The state also hosts the Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT), Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, Enugu State College of Education Technical, Enugu, Caritas University, Amorji-Nike, Renaissance University, Ugbawka, Our Saviour’s Institute of Science and Technology, Enugu, and the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu Seat of Wisdom Secondary School Trans Ekulu Enugu. There are also a host of private computer schools and training centres concentrated in Enugu and Nsukka. Medicine The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) is located in Enugu State, as is the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital and College of Medicine. In addition to numerous private hospitals and clinics in the State, there are seven District Hospitals at Enugu Urban, Udi, Agbani, Awgu, Ikem, Enugu-Ezike, and Nsukka and at least one health center or cottage hospital in every one of the seventeen (17) Local Government Areas and thirty nine (39) Development Centres in the State. Enugu State has many industries that satisfy both local and international needs: these include; Enugu Vegetable Oil Products Limited, Nachi, Nigergas Company Limited, Emene, Aluminium Product Limited, Ohebe-Dim, Enugu Building Materials Industries Ltd, Ezzamgbo, Emenite Ltd, Emene, Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company Ltd, Premier Cashew Industries Ltd, Oghe, Nigersteels Industries Ltd, Emene, Sunrise Flour Mill Ltd, Emene. Ama Brewries PLC reported to be the largest in Africa is located in Enugu Others are Ebony Paints Ltd, V . S. A. Livestock Feedmill, Ngwo, Projects Development Agency, the Enyimba Salt Project and the Vanguard Industries and the Nigerian Construction and Furniture Company (NCFC), Enugu. TOURISM The Nike Lake Resort(Now a part of the Protea Hotel Chain) which is located about 10km away from Enugu, the state capital, provides a good spot for tourists in the state. The Five Star Hotel stand out as one of the key points in the state's drive for tourism. There are also the new yam and Mmanwu festivals. There are other good hotels such as Hotel Presidential, Modotel, The Zodiac Hotels, DMatel Hotel, Hotel Motropole, David Suites, Jook Hotels, Brifina Hotel, Top Rank Hotel, Hotel Cordial, Barry Gold Hotels, Victoria Suites, Crystal Palace, Royal Palace Hotel Liberation Hotel, Brozer gardens amongst others......... Historical Development: Enugu State was created on August 27, 1991 with the city of Enugu as its capital. The state derives its name from the capital city which was established in 1912 as a small coal mining town, but later grew to become the capital of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria (Ministry of Information, 1992). In 1967, when the Gowon administration created twelve states in Nigeria, Enugu remained the capital of the East Central State of Nigeria, one of the three states carved out of the former Easthern Region. Nine years later, two states, Anambra and Imo, were carved out of the East Central State and Enugu continued to serve as the capital of Anambra state. The administrative hinterland of the city became much smaller in 1991 when Anambra State was further split to form Enugu State and the new Anambra State. In 1996, the Abakaliki area, one of the three political and administrative divisions of Enugu State, was carved out and added to a part of Abia State to make up Ebonyi State, which was cre ated in that year along with five others. Today, Enugu State covers a much reduced territory com pared to its size in 1991 when it was initially created. The town of Enugu, where coal is found in commercial quantity, is euphemistically referred to as the "coal city." The immediate fortunes of the state appear to be tied, among other things, with the rehabilitation of the coal industry, and citizens of the state take delight in being associated with the pseudonym of "the coal city state." Indeed, the shooting of Nigerian coal miners in Enugu in 1949, by military officers of the British colonial administra tion, contributed very much as a catalyst in changing the political history of the country towards the granting of Independence. Administrative Areas: There are seventeen local government areas (LGAs) in the state, five of which are largely urban. The local government areas are shown below: Local Governments Enugu South Igbo-Eze South Enugu North Nkanu Udi Agwu Oji-River Ezeagu IgboEze North Isi-Uzo Nsukka Igbo-Ekiti Uzo-Uwani Enugu East Aninri Nkanu East Udenu ADMINSTRATORS/GOVERNORS TILL DATE: John Kpera, Governor March 1976 July 1978 Military D.S. PYPE (GENERAL PYPE)
Talented NIGERIAN PYPE is the definition of the raw ghetto beauty. He's blessed with a structure that stands side by side with nature. A slim size, but large with so much creative endowments in music entertainment. His versatility spans wide whi...ch ranks PYPE as a perfect piece of art in all spheres of art. His style epitomizes the rare beauty in the ugly realities that exist in the society. Endowed with an appearance which shows a direct contrast of what his versatility and wit in music can achieve. This BOUNTY KILLERS stage protégé whose resounding notes speaks of total freedom from the fetters of the harsh streets. As a creative entity, theres so much to study from showcasing this unique talent, a rare gift whose strong voice and rendition is reminiscent of the classical era. Born and raised in the ghetto, PYPE is a true ghetto soldier who is determined to show the reality about the ghetto. Born Majekodunmi Olayiwola Ibrahim, in the early eighties, his love for the ghetto children is very remarkable orchestrated by his series of experience, while growing up. He is not happy with the way our greedy politicians ruin the lives of the youths, to satisfy their inordinate ambitions. The politicians dem nuh care bout we at all. Dem murder we future evryday likkle pickney dem lack proper brutupsy, the basic thins wey dem need fi grow mi wonder why dem call we the future leaders when a whole heap a dem busy suffer we Says Pype on his painful views about our politicians on their disastrous negligence and the rate at which its affecting the modern society. His major lifestyle model is, Dancehall phenomenon; General Bounty Killer (as he fondly calls him). His roles in the lives of many people in Jamaica, the way he has affected the society, defending the poor and the oppressed even showing them affection is quite challenging. There can be only one Bounty killer when it comes to Dancehall. His lifestyle, his leadership qualities all forms the basis of my inspiration he claims. His deep passion and love for Jamaican-originated culture of reggae and dancehall has infected him and he has continued to infect his street-based fans, with Jamaicas gift to the world. He strongly believes that, a day would come when all the frontline acts in dancehall and reggae will gather in Africa on a tour to unite and heal the nations. The absence of good record labels around his hood, to promote unadulterated dancehall, has however not jeopardized this world- class musicians ambition to impact the society positively as soon as he breaks through every limiting wall. His versatility in delivery, has been linked to many dancehall acts from Jamaica but he can be described as a man overflowing with music and melodies that deal with the more harmonious aspects of life and living he has been showcasing as a future music star, since he was ten years old he was an active member of a ten- man orchestra band as the bass singer dont be surprised however that he can read to some extent, music notes the group performed together at major landmark events for about five years till they broke up at the dawn of the millennium. His journey into reggae/dancehall is not a surprise to most of his peers because of his association with his Jamaican friends, It can be best said that, His rare gift of a voice that can turn any genre around, nurtured by passionate desire, his humorous and, down-to earth personality, the quest to be the best, explains the value attached to his name PYPE an acronym for: Prolific Youth Positive Entertainer and, in every sense of the word, he is a tube, that allows, his irresistible lyrics to flow through. This creative and artistic entertainer, endowed with good songwriting skills, has over 90 personal compositions and still counting, condemns those who try to copy and imitate the Jamaican culture without paying homage and respect to the origin of this culture. Jamaica stands for the truth and there is no way you can be accepted as a true dancehall artist if you are not certified by them I hope to make a remarkable difference by doing things the right way and that is; winning the love of the people of Jamaica and spreading it all over the world. He grew up listening to the likes of Beethoven, Frank Sinatra, Barry White, Don Carlos, U- Roy, Bob Marley; other favorite artists include Supercat, Wayne Wonder, Sean Paul, Barrington Levy, Sizzla, Buju Banton, and Spragga Benz. These musical influences, along with Pypes style, have merged, to create a unique career for him. Currently with XXL UNTERTAINMENT/PODIUM RECORDS, his management company. They have been responsible for his breathtaking live performances and showcases. In order to establish and navigate his career properly, they have continued to explore avenues that will expose him to his waiting fans internationally. He is not one of those artists ready to join the queue the truth is; he has created a queue for others to join in the world of creativity. With a couple of experimental songs like Ghetto vibes, Come with me, hes also featured on songs like; Tears from the ghetto and Calypso by Badder Boiz under the same management. To every ghetto, every city all over the world. The beauty, the struggles, the joy, the pains, the reality, of GHETTO part of you and me, is waiting to be unveiled by this thoroughbred PYPE; with his massive skills, to heal and entertain the streets with hits, we can only get in the mood to move and groove, till Shiloh//Read More
